When it comes to building a subscriber base, a little bit of money goes a long way. Most paid list-building methods are relatively inexpensive, and if used properly will more than pay for themselves in a short period of time.



For every paid method of obtaining subscribers, you will need your complete site URL and a brief (one- to three-sentence) description of your site. Word your description the same way you would in your autoresponder messages: make it short, to the point, and compelling. You will also need a list of keywords you want people to be able to find your site with through search engines.



Some popular paid list-building techniques are:



PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Campaigns



Pay-per-click ad campaigns bring visitors to your landing page by advertising your site on strategic points on the front search results page of keywords related to your topic. The term "pay-per-click" refers to the way you pay for the ads: a certain amount is deducted from your account -the money you put in to fund the campaign- each time someone clicks on your link. The most popular PPC program is Google AdWords; basically, though, all PPC campaigns work the same way.



Here is how it works: when you sign up with AdWords, you submit a list of keywords and product descriptions. For example, if you were offering an e-book about how to increase web site profits, a list of your keywords might be: website, web site, web site profits, increase profits, internet, internet profit, online profit, online business, internet business, web site business, make money online, and so forth. Come up with as many keywords and search terms as possible so you can increase your chances of getting visitors. You may also consider including common misspellings of your most important keywords. In the previous example, possibilities would be: bizness, busness, inernet.

NOTE: You can use Google's free keyword tool to generate even more related search terms for your topic.



AdWords ads appear on the right-hand side of Google's search result pages in shaded boxes. The ads consist of four lines: the first line is the title of your ad, the last is the URL of your site, and the two middle lines are descriptive text. Length is limited -25 characters for the title, and 35 characters each for descriptive text- so you should choose your wording carefully. Also, you can not use excessive punctuation (Make Lots of Cash!!!), gimmicky repetition (Money, Money, Money!), or inappropriate symbols/abbreviations (Big Bux @ my site 4 U).



AdWords operates on a pay-per-click basis. This means you pay nothing for your ads unless someone clicks on them. When you set up an AdWords account, you assign a monetary value to your keywords according to how much you are willing to pay for each click on your search terms. The minimum value you can assign to a keyword is 1 cent. You can start an account with $5, and you will never be required to put more in. However, if you find your web site traffic increasing, you may want to consider adding to your advertising budget. In addition to the minimum, you will set a maximum cost-per-click (CPC) value for your keywords. But even if you reach the maximum, the AdWords program automatically determines the lowest price you need to keep your ranking.



Yahoo! also offers a popular PPC program called Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture). The major difference between the Yahoo and the Google programs is that Yahoo requires a minimum monthly spend of $50. You may find one more effective than the other. It is always helpful to try multiple methods. More visitors means more sales!

An Introduction to Private Placement Memorandums and Regulation D (Reg D)




Reg D (formally known as Regulation D) was implemented in 1982. Reg D allows companies to raise investment capital by selling equity or debt securities without having to file a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This enables money to be invested in a company from private investors in the form of stocks and bonds. A deal that offers securities to a number of private accredited investors is called a Private Placement Offering (PPO). In order to secure funds, A

is required. This confidential document discloses all relevant and significant information to investors -- the firms transaction structure (equity ownership or debt financing), proposed operations, terms of the investment, management details, potential risks, etc.. In order to develop the Private Placement Memorandum, it is important to understand the details of Regulation D. .




Reg D has six rules: Rules 501, 502, 503: Terms and conditions that apply in Reg D are defined in these three rules.


Rule 504: Applies to transactions of securities in any consecutive twelve-month period where the value of transitions is under 1 million USD. This rule allows companies to sell securities that are not restricted by specific guidelines. In addition it allows for the payment of commissions, and imposes no specific limit on the number of investors.


Rule 505: This applies to transactions where less than $5,000,000 of securities is sold in any consecutive twelve-month period. Sales to thirty-five "non-accredited" investors and to an unlimited number of accredited investors are allowed. It's not permitted to have General Advertising and/or General Solicitation.


Rule 506: Rule 506 does not impose a dollar limitation on the offering. It is open to all issuers for offerings sold to not more than thirty-five "non-accredited purchasers" and an unlimited number of accredited investors. General solicitation is banned as is general advertising.




There are 2 Primary Types of Regulation D Offerings:


Equity: This scenario is pretty much what it sounds like. The firm raises capital by selling stocks (or other membership units). New investors have to be confident in the success of the company; they will receive no payments if the company does not succeed. They will, of course, profit handsomely if the company does succeed.


Debt: A group of investors lends capital to the company. This is very similar to a traditional financial institution providing the loan but more flexible. The annual rate of return and the maturity date are clearly laid out in advance.




Private Placement Memorandum


To be successful in raising capital, a company should have (a) a sound business plan and (b) a Private Placement Memorandum that discloses the full facts of the business venture and the desired investment and terms. This Private Placement Memorandum should be developed by qualified professionals in order to ensure that all aspects are covered properly.

Web stats. Site statistics. Don't run away... you need to read this! The very thought of deciphering site statistic programs sends many site owners running to do all kinds of tasks that are less painful and tedious, like going to the dentist or cleaning the tile grout with a toothbrush.





If you know what you are looking for, site stats are not that painful and can be a real motivator to improve performance. They are the scoreboard that allows you to benchmark your performance and challenge you to find ways to make your site convert at a higher rate; more sales, more signups, more participation.



Let's review some of the basic terminology you will find in most web analytics program and demystify it so that you know what to measure, what to ignore, and what it all means.



Hits



Hits are the most overused and misunderstood measurement in web analytics. In the early days, people would brag about how many hits their website got... today most people know that hits are not a reliable measurement.



A hit is any element called by your browser when it requests a page. A single page may register a single hit or hundreds of hits based o¬n how it has been built. Images, external style sheets, external java scripts, and other elements that require the server

to pull a file to build the page register as hits. Since every page has a different number of elements, hits are not a reliable measurement.



Files



A file is a hit that actually returned data from the server. Not all hits return data. Cached elements and errors are examples of hits that are not counted as files. This measurement is not likely to be helpful to you either.



Pages or Page Views



A Page or Page View is a measurement of the pages requested from the server. This is a good measurement to keep up with. You can get a rough idea of the number of pages the average visitor views by dividing this number by the number of visitors.



Page views can give you an idea of whether or not visitors are finding what they need o¬n your site and progressing through it or viewing a single page and leaving.



Sites, Unique Visitors, and Repeat Visitors



Sites and unique visitors increment your visitors by recording their IP address. This gives you an idea of the number of visitors to your site in a given time period. It's not entirely accurate as people visiting your site from the same IP address (such as people o¬n an office network or o¬n dial-up where IP's rotate) will be counted as a single site or visitor.



Repeat visitors simply takes that IP address and compares it to see if the same IP address has visited more than o¬nce. Again, a margin of error for multiple users o¬n the same IP address will skew this number.



Session and Visit Duration



This metric tries to measure the amount of time a user browsed your site. While it seems like a good idea to measure this, it's not a very accurate measurement. People may not be actively browsing your site, but they may have it open. A visit may "time out" at different intervals, and a new session is started for the same visitor.



One thing to note would be a large number of very short visits; it may indicate your search terms are not very well targeted and people are not finding what they expect o¬n your site.



Referrers or Referring Sites



The link a visitor clicked o¬n to arrive at your site is counted as a referrer or referring site. A large number of your referrers will be internal pages, the rest will be other sites or search engines. You may also see some web-based e-mail programs in your

referrer logs. Bookmarked pages and urls typed directly into the browser will not show a referrer.



Referring sites is definitely something you want to watch- you can tell who is linking to you and how much traffic they send, including the search engines. When checking referring sites, don't click the URL in your web analytics program... copy and paste it into a new browser window. Otherwise your stats page will then appear in their referring sites!



Search Terms and Search Strings



Search terms and search strings are pulled from the referring url from traffic sent by search engines. Search strings are more useful than search terms...just because a single words are listed in the search terms does not mean a visitor found your site by

typing in that o¬ne word. It's simply every word in the search strings listed separately.



Search strings can tell you a lot about your search engine traffic- Are there phrases there you didn't expect? What phrases that you did expect are missing?



Browsers, User Agents, and Operating Systems



Browsers or user agents and operating systems will tell you what type of browser and operating system your visitors are using, often detailing it to the version number. You may want to double-check to see how your pages render in the browsers your

visitors are using. Don't get lulled into a false sense of security by a small percentage of users for a specific browser... translate that percentage into actual numbers. You may want to check again for browser compatibility!



This information will typically show you the search engine robots traffic as well; you can see how often they are visiting your site and how many pages they are viewing.



Entry and Exit Pages



This is an interesting metric- it details the top entry pages (the first page a visitor arrives at) and the top exit pages (the last page they view before leaving or timing out). This can help you identify the high interest pages and the pages where you are

losing visitors.



If you can combine this metric with top pages viewed, you can get an idea of how people are progressing through your site.



The Basics



There are many, many things a web analytics package can tell you these days that are truly amazing. o¬nce you grasp the basics of these measurements that are included in any web analytics software, you will understand better what you want to measure and

why. Then it's time to trade up to a full-featured package that can give you that finely detailed information in the way you want to see it.



Most hosts these days have free web analytics programs installed- check your control panel for your sites and see. It's probably labeled as "web stats" or "statistics". The most popular o¬nes are Webalizer, Analog, and AWStats. If you don't have a web analytics program installed but you do have access to your raw logfiles, try Funnel Web (http://www.funnelwebcentral.com/), a free log analyzer.



If you don't have built-in stats or access to your logfiles, get a new host! You really do need to review this information monthly or quarterly to see how your site is doing with traffic and visitors. Put it o¬n your calendar now- start benchmarking! You need to know the score.

Search And Web Analytics -- What You Don't Know by Jerry Moyer

I'M THE NUMBERS GUY. IN an interactive agency full of creative, vibrant, idea people, I'm the guy wearing the Coke-bottle glasses and pocket protector who counts all of the traffic to our clients' sites.



I analyze Web traffic, campaign data, and the like to describe and explain users' behaviors and how those behaviors impact business goals. Something not many people do or understand. And when you've done what I do for as long as I've done it (about seven years now), you tend to get a little full of yourself. Well, at least I do. People in marketing are often anxious about math and Microsoft Excel. I do what I can to foster that angst in the name of job security.



However, being the results guy has led me to the often mistaken conclusion that I can get the whole picture using the site data at my disposal. I can tell you what users' needs are by where they go on a site. I can tell you where users run into trouble by where they leave a site, particularly if they leave in the middle of a process. I can tell you about users' expectations of the information architecture by the paths they take, the paths they don't, and by which ones convert better.



But I've got to admit that Web traffic data can't tell you everything. It can't tell you much about users' intent. It can't tell you what users are really looking for or how they would describe what they're looking for. Fortunately, that's where my friends in the search engine marketing department come in.



Of course I believed that I understood search for years. Yes, I understood the difference between an organic and a sponsored listing. I understood what paid inclusion was, how some engines powered others, and why your search rankings may not improve overnight. I even understood what meta tags were, why they were so important in the past, and why they are now so marginalized, poor things.



What I didn't see was the big picture. Understanding how users search, what keywords and engines they use, and how they respond to content within the context of their search peels another layer off the onion of true understanding (I'm sorry for that analogy, I really am). By looking at how users find your site, you can learn so much more about intent and perspective than you can by simply looking at a user's path out of context.



A great example of this deeper understanding occurred while I was working with our search marketing team to develop and measure keyword categories. We took the keyword list we had selected for optimization and created logical groups. By looking at keyword groups, we were essentially building customer segments that gave us greater insight into behavior. We can now track the popularity of searches within keyword groups to see the effect of business cycles, news, and promotion on search behavior. We can also track conversion by keyword group to better understand how our client's site meets the needs of different audiences.



I will resist the temptation to say that after working with our search marketing team, I now know all there is to know. What I think I've learned is that I had better take the thick glasses off before they ruin my vision. And hopefully what you've learned is that there's a lot more to site traffic and search marketing than meets the eye.

My First Experiences With Google Adsense by nexxus

My first experiences with the Google Adsense program started this past year when I carefully moved my website to another top name webhosting company. The last pompous company that hosted my site severely restricted the use of outside advertising, accordingly my move was both from a monetary standpoint as well as about having the ability to freely use PHP, CGI and other website wizardry.



At first there was very little, if any, revenue from Google Adsense, but as I learned more about ad placement, border color, and sizing, my income has gradually begun to climb. I've also been blessed with a steady rise in traffic that has also helped increase my Google Adsense earnings. The only drawback that I have incurred is the low cost-per-click ads that the particular content of my site appears to draw. I still continue to experiment with ad placement, border colors, ad sizes, as well as many other creative ways to enhance my profits.



I was recently surprised when one of my website visitors emailed me to say that he was offended by one of the ads on my site. These seem to be the latest craze in adsense income along with other affiliate programs. Thus the latest term “blog farms.” Here I will begin building WordPress blogs that I've found to be a fairly easy content management system. Many state that the best place to create your income-producing blog is Blogger.com. There are many reasons given for this by so-called adsense experts. But this will be reserved for another article at another time. So this is my next big adventure with Google Adsense, one in which I hope will begin to bring the massive checks that we all enthusiastically read about, one in which we all hope will become our own experience in the not too distant future.

It’s a fact. The search engines don’t really care about most websites. If the search engines could talk (perish the thought) they’d tell you that for most keywords, only the first page or two of results are really worthwhile. The relevancy drops off very quickly, and the remaining several million websites stored in their indexes are irrelevant, and invisible. If this sounds like the problem your website is facing, read on.



In order to rank well, you have to do certain basic things. You can’t expect to get to the top of the pile without any effort. To get your website near the top, you’re going to have to break a sweat. The ten rules that follow aren’t the only rules in the SEO game. But they are good ones. Use them all, diligently, and your site will start moving up the charts within a couple of months.



1. Stay organized. Develop good planning habits and record-keeping and stick to them.



2. Start with a good website. If you site is boring, uninformative, and unoriginal, why would the major search engines want to send visitors there? They wouldn’t. So build great content.



3. Directory submissions are nothing to get hung up on. Just do it and move on. Directories are a small piece of the puzzle, not a whole campaign. You can find suggestions for good directories at www.directorylist.org, www.isedb.com, and www.searchengineguide.com.

8. If organized link hunts are good, disorganized link hunting is just as good. Huh? Disorganized link hunting occurs when you track the competition to see who is linking to them. Then you go after the same links. That’s why it’s disorganized – you are just hunting around wherever your nose leads you. For in-depth tracking, consider the tracking service from www.googlealert.com. They are not a part of Google, but they track Google, and they are Google-approved.



9. Study your web statistics. For successful SEO, you must track who is coming to your site, how they are finding you, and how they navigate your site. Good stats packages can be found at www.google.com/analytics, as well as www.websidestory.com, and www.webtrends.com, to name a few.



10. Stay on top of the news, and be alert for random opportunity. This is often overlooked. When things happen in your industry – a new product, a show, a controversy – be ready to write about it. If you don’t, someone else will, and they will get all the links. If news breaks, talk about it in forums, on your website, and in your blog.

The Dodo, T-Rex, and Aggressive Search Engine Optimization – Gone Forever. Here’s What You Can Do Now…



You can really take a lot of flak from people who don’t read and listen carefully to what you say.



Note to reader: Never declare the death of something even if it is a foregone conclusion and 100% true unless you are ready for some grief from the peanut gallery.



Such was the case when we started telling people on webinars and teleconferences that SEO was dead.



SEO? DEAD? My goodness you could hear the cans of whoopass opening up from all the 90-pound geekling search engine optimization firms around the world.



The pocket protector (a geek’s gauntlet) had been thrown down.



Context has a lot to do with any bold statement and declaring SEO dead was in a context that explains perfectly what I meant by it.



The web has changed drastically this year. Call it web 2.0 or whatever you wish, but the webscape is a mighty different place than it was a year ago.



Everything has changed from search engines to social networking to publishing platforms (what you actually run your content on).



I guess I should qualify that by saying the web has changed, but most marketers have yet to wake up and smell the coffee.



Back to SEO being dead. The context in which this declaration was made was when we were recently discussing the new results we’d gotten from heavy testing and the fact that what used to work for us no longer worked.



One might think “bummer, man!” Actually it is a blessing in disguise. With the right system for publishing, the right technology, tools and tactics, the web is easier to market on than it ever has been before.



Website owners no longer have to pour through endless forum threads and documentation, expensive courses and training seminars to learn heavy-duty search engine optimization.



It is no longer necessary to do anything more than post and rank, once you have the right tools working for you.



One big reason is that Google and the other engines are switching to become more dynamic and fluid in their rankings. This is evidenced by our own testing and what you’ve probably seen yourself.



There has been a fluidity to search engine rankings in the last few months unbecoming the slow, lumbering state the engines used to operate in when trying to stay up to date and relevant.



Google is actually living up to its promise to reward webmasters who develop relevant, topical, visitor-useable content. Visitor Optimization, they call it.



It was a leap of faith, but we started publishing solely to please our markets without aggressively optimizing. Just like Google asked us to do. No hardcore late night sessions doing endless keyword research or inflating our keyword densities to cheat the system.



(We’ve concluded that trying cheat a multi-billion dollar mega corporation with thousands of geeks programming and watching our every move was a dumb idea.)



Simply putting out content that the market wanted appreciated is all we do now.



Guess what? My sites now enjoy a plethora of top 10 rankings in Google for scores of keyword phrases. Keywords people are actually using to find my site, not just “vanity” keywords no one searches on.



We are doing this with no aggressive or even moderately aggressive search engine optimization.



We are using a blog platform that performs better than anything else we’ve used (based on Wordpress). We are using high tech RSS tools to syndicate content. We are using social networking to get links. We are tagging and pinging and using autodiscovery in a new way.



Aside from using common sense SEO strategies like carefully naming our posts, linking within our sites with keyword phrases (as long as it makes sense to do so) and naturally writing about relevant topics, there is nothing remotely like the old SEO we had to do on the old web.



Once people take the same leap of faith we have and start using publishing tools that engines eat up along with posting regular, ORIGINAL, relevant content, they will start to see the same results.



What you need to see this happen for you:



1. You must be blogging on a high-tech platform (At least Wordpress out of the box – nothing does better in the engines.)



2. Create multiple tagged RSS feeds based on your top keywords and use autodiscovery in your template to shove content in the face of spiders.



3. Tag, Tag, Tag! And Ping! Ping! Ping!



4. Supplement your original content with relevant syndicated content.



5. Post every single day, even more than once a day, on real topics of interest to your market.



Make these changes and watch the fun begin. Post, rank, and watch those aggressive, sleepless, stressful search engine optimization days fade away in your rearview mirror forever!

It would be nice if we could master search engine optimization, and procure high rankings simply by editing Meta tags, but that’s just not going to happen. The reason is because, in order to achieve SEO success, a combined effort of different, long-term methods is required. There is no “one quick fix” that will solve the problem.



Nevertheless, despite the fact that there are no easy solutions, people still insist on using various techniques to try and find them. For instance, it is possible to quickly generate high rankings from words that no internet users will search for. However, even if you rank number one, if no one uses the words, your business will flop.



In addition, the following are some more quick fixes that many people try, and fail at:



Changing or Adding Meta Tags – Search engines are limited when it comes to deciding what sites should be shown in the result list of a keyword search. Meta keyword tags assist search engines and help them select the pages with the most relevancy that pertain to the keyword of a Web surfer.



Of course, there is a difference between a public search engine, like Yahoo, and an internal search engine. A public search engine contains virtually every webpage they are aware of. Therefore, they can’t trust all the Meta tags they find, as not all website have been designed to provide the internet users with relevant information on the keyword they are searching for. Some website have been set up for the sole purpose of advertising and generating traffic. Thus, the goal of a public search engine is to weed out these “irrelevant” websites and help searchers find exactly what they are looking for.



An internal search engine, on the other hand, consists of only a small amount of web pages or products. Therefore, it is less difficult for the search engine to produce the most relevant pages. Moreover, the Meta tags that are present on the internal search engine on your site are trustworthy; because your goal is to help your visitors find what they are looking for.



When all is said and done, by adding or changing the Meta tags on your website doesn’t quickly or slowly fix anything. The bottom line is this method will have not effect on the result of your SEO traffic.



Increasing Web Content – Increasing web content can boost your SEO success, but this is something that takes plenty of time. Sure you can quickly increase the content by writing useless puff pieces, using auto-generating software, or ripping off content from other sites, but none of these methods are actually going to improve your business profits in the long run.



The only web content that is going to secure your success is information that is relevant and valuable. It takes time and experience to generate this type of information, so don’t try to cheat your way to the top with wasted words or words that are not your own. Stay true to your business and keep your integrity.



Link Popularity - One of the most popular quick fix methods out there are link schemes. Anyone who does business on the internet knows how valuable links are. Links are what help to increase web traffic and increase website visibility. That being said, you will want to avoid becoming a “link farm”, because if your goal is to only get links to increase your SEO rankings, you’re not going to take your business anywhere.



As tempting as it might sound, you need to ignore link popularity. Your focus should be on your target market, and how you can reach them to let them know your website exists. Thus, you need to market your website, which means you may have to dish out a little money to publicize your website in local newspapers, magazine, or even in a television ad. The more your site is recognized, the better chance it has of ending up in the right niche markets to attract the right attention.

The SEO industry has experienced a sudden boom over the last few years, and we are in the thick of it at this exact moment. As this focus on SEO continues to build, the thoughts and strategies have become more intricate and involved. It is becoming ever more clear that the concept of a “basic website” is on its way out. This fact is making website designers and site optimizers wonder whether it is still possible to achieve overnight, painless SEO success these days, even though everybody else out there is making the same efforts?



When SEO first began, it seemed as though SEO was the magical key to the absolute best search engine ranking. And, for a while, it really was. All that was required was a list of keywords within the meta tags of a site, and there it would be at the top of the search lists at all major search engines and directories. And then, meta tags no longer counted, and doorway pages became the “thing”.



That didn’t last, leading next to links wherever they could be found. The more, the better. When links became important, web designers and web masters hurried to have link scripts built in to their sites and have directories of relevant categories. Most recently, this has changed to text link ads – paid links.



With all of these fads, Google was struggling to keep the “legitimate” efforts separate from the “SPAM” or manipulated sites. With paid links being overused, Google had to work overtime to filter out the manipulation of ranking. This is the primary reason that there is such a delay in the addition and indexing of new sites and brand new domains, even on this state-of-the-art, enormous search engine.



The problem that many sites face, though is that legitimate quality sites are sometimes being swept away in the catch-all fishnet being used by Google to filter out the “bad guys”. Webmasters who have poured months of time, and thousands of dollars into finding the ideal keywords for their sites, and then applying them with the best possible strategy going are now finding that their efforts were more of a fad than a long term investment.



However, their efforts were likely not entirely in vain. SEO does still work. It must be remembered, though, that it is not a matter of following one fad or another, but is instead a careful balance of the elements considered to be most important by Google and the other major search engines. It also means that a high ranking website will be one that is continuously updated to maintain its value in the eyes of the great Google.



Therefore, no longer is there any need for hours upon hours of time, and thousands upon thousands of dollars spent on attempting to fool search engines into giving you a good rank for the keyword phrases you think are most important to your site. Instead, work with an SEO specialist to find the keywords that actually have value to your site worked into your content. SEO isn’t just a matter of packing your content with the keyword you like best so that it looks like a bad form of keyword chicken pox. It is a delicate balance of keywords sprinkled at a certain ratio to the rest of your content’s text.



Furthermore, this content needs to be informative. Something that your visitors will value. This will increase your number of visitors, and, since this is one of the elements most valued by Google, this will help to increase and maintain your rank over time.



The point is that SEO can still be achieved rather painlessly and still be successful, as long as it is performed by someone who is aware of the latest important elements established by Google, and knows how to avoid getting caught in the filters. Your task, therefore, is no longer to spend a great deal of time and money on SEO, but to find someone who can assist, advise, and provide for you in a timely manner.



The results won’t happen overnight, nor will they even be seen within the first month, however will constant attention, they will be seen. Google has made it impossible to simply create a site that tops the ranks forever. But Google has not made it impossible to climb your rank and maintain a high status. Show them that you have a quality site that matters to the web users who make searches using certain words, and that these web users want to see your site, and Google will reward you with exactly what you want – the high ranking you need.

Their method sheds light on some very interesting ideas on how Google might judge the quality of inbound links.



Good links Vs Bad links



Since the Jagger update, Google seems to be emphasizing link relevance and link quality a lot more. While relevance is pretty straight forward to understand, quality of an inbound link may be a foreign subject to those not involved in search engine marketing as part of their daily lives. So let's first discuss good links versus bad links. Not all links are equal. Links from popular sites carry more weight than links from virtually unknown sites.

It is a well-known fact that Google's initial success lay in their ability to find websites and rank them based on links from other websites. As Google's popularity grew, some webmasters tried to outsmart the Google algorithm by falsely inflating the importance of their website with unnatural inbound link development. Links that are developed in such a way, with the mere intention of fooling Google's algorithm to gain higher rankings are considered to be bad links.



What is Spam Mass?



The research team from California devised a term - spam mass - to denote the ratio of good links to bad links for any website. Simplisticly speaking, if 60% of the inbound links to a website originate from spam domains - domains identified to be built solely for the purpose of artifically inflating a website's popularity - then the spam mass of the site would be 60%

Ranking is not that simple, though, and variables such as PageRank, relevance, age etc creep in to complicate such a calculation. However, the idea bears a lot of potential from which further ideas can be developed.

Google is getting better at recognizing when search engine optimisation relies on spammy link development to improve rank. The principles Google uses to do so, are likely to be based on concepts similar to spam mass. For example the Google system can differentiate links from good domains and spam domains. If the PageRank of your site is mostly due to links from spam sites, Google will accordingly devalue your PageRank, discount any effect from inbound links from the spam domains and, in extreme cases, label your domain as a spam domain too! All of this can lead to a reduction in your site's rank on the search results.



How to avoid Google penalties for spam links



The easy answer to this is always "build your site for people, not for search engines". That doesn't mean you do not carry out the necessary search engine optimisation. It just means that you should not indulge in unnatural practices to artificially influence rank. Ideally, let your site and rank grow as if it were a natural progression.

• Do not indulge in reciprocal link exchanges with spam type domains

• Stay away from link farms

• Exchange links with your suppliers and customers

• Get links from trade bodies, governing organisations

• Exchange links with competitors, other related sites

• Provide links to relevant authority sites

Well, it's all a pile of B.S. I'm pleased to tell you.



Sure the search engines are going to get fed up with "junk" sites like the plethora of adsense sites that have appeared and been sold to death. Those sort of sites the search engines will work out how to find and de-list as it reduces the whole "search engine experience".



However, websites are going to have similar or even duplicate content. It's a fact of life that the search engines can't penalise everyone for duplicate content because all the newsfeed sites would instantly be out of business.



Duplicate content is a fact of the Internet. With tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) sites, content is going to be duplicated.



There are some steps you can take to make your content more powerful and effective.



When you have articles written do the following:



a) Create a single unique article for use on your website (create multiple unique articles if you plan on using the article on more than one of your websites)



b) Create a different version of the article to submit to article directories. It can be a good idea to create a number of different versions of the same article and submit them to different directories



You can make multiple versions of the same article using software like Content Maestro (available at: ) which will help you to change the content of the article.



Some people tell you not to submit an article to multiple article directories at the same time for fear of the search engines penalising them.
