Search Engine Optimization: A Business Necessity by Tabitha Naylor
OK, let’s face it. E-commerce is a cut throat business. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s so darn easy. Unlike most retail shops, you rarely ever see your customer. Because of this, to run a successful business, you have to arm yourself with the proper know-how and tools to make your site a cut above the rest.
Each day, more and more webmasters are optimizing their websites. And if you lose your guard, you may, no I take that back, you will get trampled, left in the abyss filled with so many failed e-commerce sites.
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a term widely used today by many e-commerce sites. For the past few years, search engines have been the most widely used internet tool to find sites that people need to find the information or product they are seeking. While the wild world of ecommerce is constantly changing, you can pretty much bet that this will continue long into the future. Don’t believe me? Think about this: when you are looking for information, how do you find it?
Now, here’s more food for thought. Most people who use search engines use only the ten top search results in the first page. So, if you do a search for “weight loss” on Google, and 121,000,000 results pop up. Well, I think you can see where I am going with this.
Making it to the first page, more so to the top three, is a barometer of a sites success in search engine optimization. If you can make it into this upper echelon, your website link is pretty much guaranteed a higher ratio of probability to be clicked. And, the more traffic your site receives, the more business you rake in.
To grab a hold of one of these coveted top spots, proper search engine optimization is a necessity. A daunting task, maybe, but keep in mind that each day is a new day for all e-commerce sites, to make themselves rank higher using search engine optimization. It is imperative to make your site better and better everyday. This is a continuous process, its not something you do once and forget about it.
So just what is search engine optimization and do you have to use it? The answers to these questions are quite simple. You need search engine optimization to be in one of the top positions when someone searches for a particular product or piece of information… which in turn will assist your site in generating profit. Ask anyone generating significant income on the internet. They will no doubtedly agree.
With search engine optimization, you reap the benefit of generating a high traffic volume. For example, let’s just say that only 10 to 20 percent of your website traffic equates to sales. If you get a hundred hits or more a day, that’s 10-20 sales, per day. If you get only 10 to 20 hits a day, you only get one or two sales, if any at all. It’s a numbers game.
So what exactly is search engine optimization? Search engine optimization is utilizing strategic tools and methods meant to skyrocket your website to top rankings in search engine results. Getting yourself on the first page, and better yet, in the top half of that page, will ensure your site to be seen by the public eye. This, in turn, generates public awareness of your site’s existence, and subsequently, generates more traffic. This increase in traffic flow leads to potential income and business.
Search engine optimization requires a lot of work to be fully realized. And, truth be told, there are many things you might have to change on your site. Usually, to be successful, you will need to gather a tremendous amount of information regarding keyword phrases that are popular in regards to your sites niche or theme.
You may also need to rewrite your sites content so that the right keyword phrases are included on your site. The key here is to do this without making it your site too commercial. You want your site to remain light and informative. There are certain rules and guidelines to be followed with making your site’s content applicable and conducive to search engine optimization. Keyword stuffing is definitely not one of them. In fact, sites that used to be in the top positions for certain keywords (that used keyword stuffing to get there) are being banned by the search engines. No one wants to visit a site where the information is garbled junk, with every ten words saying “weight loss.” Your site needs to provide quality content. Just make sure that this content is built around your certain niche.
Another key to SEO is to collaborate with other websites. The main purpose by doing this is to participate in link exchanges and page transfers. The more inbound and outbound traffic generated by other sites, the better. I recommend trying to keep incoming and outgoing links in the same niche categories; however, there is much debate on this topic. Do what you feel is appropriate.
Also, utilize the internet for useful help. Tips, guidelines, and methods for search engine optimization are everywhere. There are a host of online forums at your fingertips. Use them. Read as many articles as you can. The more knowledge and information you possess, the better. Proper SEO is a multi tiered process. It’s not going to happen overnight, so get out of this mentality now. Yes, it’s going to require time and effort on your part, but, stick it out. The benefits will be astounding.
If you can swing it, part with some money. There are plenty of companies out there that can help you with your search engine optimization. Just make sure you do your proper research. There are also a lot of scam artists. There are also many sites that can assist you in tracking keyword phrases for your site. And, if you really have money to burn, there are some content writers who have lots of experience in creating good keyword laden content for your website... content that is also good quality.
So, with that being said, the time to act is now. It’s going to take some time to reap the benefits of your hard work towards proper SEO for your website. However, rest assured; proper SEO will result in high quality traffic and more business for your site and company.
